Following step takes place-
(1) Phthalimide is reacted with alcoholic solutions of KOH to form potassium Phthalimide.
(2) The potassium salt formed is treated with alkyl halide.
(3) The product N-alkyl Phthalimide is hydrolysed with NaOH to form a primary amine.
